Aéroports de Paris picks COFOR to bore a deep geothermal doublet
Aéroports de Paris signed a contract with COFOR to bore a geothermal doublet at Paris-
Orly airport.
The work requires boring two oriented and offset wells, approximately 1750 meters deep.
These two wells, adjacent on the surface, will be approximately 400 metres apart at the
bottom.
Ultimately, over 6,500 linear meters of steel tubes will be used in the drilling operations.
While awaiting the arrival in March 2010 of drilling equipment that will make it possible to
reach the final depth of 1,750 metres, COFOR has started drilling preparations (arranging
the drilling area and positioning the first support tube at a depth of 35 m).
Paris-Orly airport is located above the Dogger aquifer containing warm ground water. At a
depth of 1,700 m, the water temperature reaches 74 °C. According to initial Aéroports de
Paris estimates, it would be possible to obtain a flowrate of almost 250 m3/h. It will be
possible to save approximately 40 GWh of gas, thus avoiding emission of up to 9,000
tons of CO2 each year.
